Meet Our Staff
Kulaniapia is a different sort of Bed and Breakfast Resort for many reasons... Set and Setting, Architecture, Sublime and Pristine Waterfalls, Walking Trails, Hydro Electric Facility.. but what really makes Kulaniapia special are the people that run the Inn on a daily basis. Our Staff...
This is not just a place where hired help come to work... this is place where most of our staff live. This is the place they love to call home, and gracious hospitality is what we provide
We've put together a short biography and some photos of some of our staff so that you might better know the people that you will meet during your stay with us.
Lara Harton - Resident Manager
Lara found her way to Kulaniapia 6 years ago and this has been home for her ever since. Originally from Louisiana, Lara came to Hilo primarily to attend the University of Hawaii at Hilo campus for studies in Psychology and has has since graduated from her course of studies and works at Kulaniapia full time.
For many years Lara's position at Kulanpiapia was that of "Innkeeper". Mainly responsible for preparing breakfast, refreshing or re-making rooms, and generally dispensing Aloha. Over the years Lara's responsibilities grew to operating our reservations software, responding to emails and answering the phone. If you have sent us email or phoned us, you have probably been in contact with Lara. The steady hand that oversees the operation of the Inn in my absence... my friend and confidante and now Resident Manager in charge of guest relations, Lara's job is to make sure that every guest that checks into Kulaniapia has an exceptional experience. If you are interested in participating in any of the exciting activities that are offered in East Hawaii, Lara can make those arrangements for you and save you 10% on most attractions. Need to make dinner reservations?? Let Lara know, she'll be happy to make sure your table is waiting. Need to leave a special something for a loved one that is registered or will be checking into the Inn..?? We're happy to help. You will receive reliable information from Lara to help you plan your adventure on the "Hilo Side"
Lea Carrico - InnKeeper
Raised in west Virginia, Lea came to Hilo in 2003 to attend the University of Hawaii at Hilo for studies in Marine Biology. Shortly after graduation in 2007, Lea found her way to Kulaniapia and fell in love with the property, and thought she might give Innkeeping a try. Five years later, the rest, as they say, is history. Lea found she has a real talent for the Breakfast Party that we all enjoy every morning. The depth of the love and care Lea feels for her guests is truly heartfelt and the enthusiasm with which she shares her love of the Big Island is contagious.
Jasmine Hetfield - InnKeeper
Our resident Free Spirit, Jasmine pulls it off with surprising sophistication. Jasmine is well traveled and her experience is varied and eclectic. Fluent in Spanish, Jasmine has traveled the world extensively using her degree in Elementary Education to teach in far flung corners of the world... Guatamala, South Korea, and Saipan. Our friend and neighbor, and valued member of our staff, you will find her company delightful in the morning and her knowledge of Hilo and the Big Island extensive.
